MFRS Youth Night

We had an amazing evening of sharing and fun on May 26 2021 with the awesome youth at the Military Family Resource Centre on 5 Wing Goose Bay in Happy Valley-Goose Bay, NL. We had a great discussion! Big thanks to the youth who attended and Heather & Erin for inviting SHIELD Coordinator Denise Cole to present on relationships, sexual health, and consent.

Drums & Songs with Eastern Owl

SHIELD partnered with Lawrence O’ Brien Arts Centre to host a youth workshop with Eastern Owl on May 20, 2021. It was an awesome evening of drumming, singing, and sharing with local Labrador youth. SHIELD Coordinator Denise Cole also presented sexual health information. Eastern Owl is an award winning Indigenous women’s drum/music group from Newfoundland and we were so grateful to have them share with us!

Thank you to the sponsors that made this possible and the youth who attended.

Healthy Relationships Plus Program 2021

Labrador Friendship Centre’s SHIELD Project & YMCA NL partnered to host Healthy Relationships Plus Program (HRPP) for youth in the Lake Melville area ages 12-18.

Along with a great support team, facilitators Dawna Lee & Lisa Sheppard, guided the youth on an 8 week journey about relationships. We are very thankful to the youth participating and all the adults supporting them. We are also very happy to be hosting this at the Lawrence O’Brien Arts Centre, who we partner with often.

Big thanks to the youth attending and facilitators Dawna Lee (Raven’s Nest Art Therapy) and Lisa Sheppard (YMCA of Newfoundland and Labrador). Along with support team members Anthony Elliott/Denise Cole (LFC Shield Project), Petrina Beals (Violence Prevention Labrador), Deirdre Connolly (NL Sexual Assault Crisis and Prevention Centre), Karyn Hopkins (LG Health), and Emily Cook (Shushepeshipan Ishpitentamun Mitshuap Inc.). Thank you to Charles J Andrew Treatment Centre for their contributions.

Weekly Jam Sessions

Every Thursday from December 2020 to February 2021, SHIELD held weekly jam sessions at the Lawrence O’Brien Arts Centre. Students aged 12 – 18 from the Lake Melville area were invited to come out and play music with their peers and fellow musicians in a safe space where all were included!

Students who attended played music on SHIELDs beautiful new instruments and some even brought their own! At the end of each session attendees left with music in their soul and a little bit of sexual health information in their pocket.

Thank you to the Lawrence O’Brien Arts Centre for making these events possible!

#HIVAID Campaign

The HIVAID campaign was created using Catie.ca as a source in order to spread knowledge and awareness around a dangerous but treatable STBBI (Sexually Transmitted and Blood Borne Infection). When left untreated, HIV can do serious damage to the body, but medicine has come a long way and HIV is no longer a death sentence! Many people live long and healthy lives with HIV undergoing proper treatment. To learn more about HIV, how it transmits, how it’s treated and how it may affect you, take a look at our #HIVAID campaign!
