Beadwork & Wellness – January 2020

SHIELD co-hosted this event with Empowering Indigenous Women for Stronger Communities in Goose Bay for individuals ages 12-18. Youth artist Mckenzie Dyson & mentor Patti Maloney co-facilitated this wonderful workshop that combined learning beadwork techniques with wellness presentations held by DeeDee Voisey, Karyn Hopkins & Denise Cole. We talked about sexual health, self-care & mental health while learning about the cultural roots of beading, which also encourages wellbeing. Thank you to all the youth who attended, facilitators & College of the North Atlantic.

SHIELD Indigenous Youth Video Project – December to January, 2019 to 2020

Labrador Friendship Centre – Youth Video Project

The above link will take you to the NCCIE Educational Tools website where you can view the videos and lesson plans.

The Indigenous Youth Video Project consists of 6 short films highlighting Indigenous Youth Storytellers from central Labrador, captured by Videographer/Editor John Gaudi. The Storytellers include Raine Hart, Mckenzie Dyson, Philip Snow, Rebecca Blake, Jackson Obed & Samantha Newman. SHIELD Coordinator Denise Cole & Community Service Coordinator Jenni-Rose Campbell were Project Leads through the Labrador Friendship Centre in Goose Bay. Youth were presented with a theme to explore through video and storytelling of “What being Indigenous mean to me”. A very exciting component of this project is that the films are online through our LFC SHIELD Project YouTube channel https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLCyIHnev03klqNJfIx5N5cEOfAbO5A3bv & NCCIE’s website www.nccie.ca where they will be promoted as educational resources for schools & other groups to bring young Indigenous knowledge holders into classrooms and learning spaces. This project was made possible with financial support from the National Centre for Collaboration on Indigenous Education (NCCIE), sponsored by the Labrador Friendship Centre. Special thanks to the youth, their families, John Gaudi, Dr. Sylvia Moore & all who helped make this project a reality.

Winter Slam – December, 2019

We had a great turn out for our first Winter Slam event held on December 14, 2019! 24 youth & 14 supportive adults attended. Lots of music with our new MusiCounts gear. Art Hive included print making with Dawna Lee, metal tooling with aluminum with Peyton Barrett, & putting a skin on a native hand drum with George Barrett. Games & VR Goggles were a hit. We also had a sexual health demo with LG Health staff Stephanie Almon & SHIELD Coordinator Denise Cole. Open mic had youth and artist role models playing great music on our MusiCounts instruments/equipment. Big thanks to our youth planning team, partners at the Lawrence O’Brien Arts Centre in Goose Bay for letting us have the event at the centre, and all the adult artist role models who donated their time! And of course all the youth who attended and made it a huge success!

Aboriginal AIDS Awareness Week – December, 2019

SHIELD Coordinator Denise Cole is also the Labrador representative on the Board of the Canadian Aboriginal AIDS Network who organizes event for the annual national Aboriginal AIDS Awareness Week. 3 excellent events were hosted by SHIELD along with a daily awareness social media campaign. We were very happy to also partner with Labrador Grenfell Health, Sheshatshiu Innu First Nation, NunatuKavut Community Council, and Nunatsiavut Dept of Health & Social Development during the week. A well-attended film luncheon started the week at the Labrador Friendship Centre in Goose Bay. This was followed up by a youth movie & activities night at the Ussiniun Youth Centre in Sheshatshiu. Both events showcased the film Strong Medicine. We wrapped up the week with lunchtime activities/giveaways at Mealy Mountain Collegiate in Goose Bay.
