SHIELD Coordinator Denise Cole is also the Labrador representative on the Board of the Canadian Aboriginal AIDS Network who organizes event for the annual national Aboriginal AIDS Awareness Week. 3 excellent events were hosted by SHIELD along with a daily awareness social media campaign. We were very happy to also partner with Labrador Grenfell Health, Sheshatshiu Innu First Nation, NunatuKavut Community Council, and Nunatsiavut Dept of Health & Social Development during the week. A well-attended film luncheon started the week at the Labrador Friendship Centre in Goose Bay. This was followed up by a youth movie & activities night at the Ussiniun Youth Centre in Sheshatshiu. Both events showcased the film Strong Medicine. We wrapped up the week with lunchtime activities/giveaways at Mealy Mountain Collegiate in Goose Bay.
A great night of painting and sexual health information was shared in Port Hope Simpson on Nov 20 as 14 youth from the community attended. The event was hosted by SHIELD youth volunteer Brianna Poole and CYN Coordinator Gwenda Penney at the GAP Centre. Public Health Nurse Joanne Bridle attended and gave an awesome “Sexuality & You” presentation. Painting was all about what participants love about Labrador and everyone created such inspiring art pieces! All supplies were provided by SHIELD and CYN. Thanks for an awesome event organizers!
An awesome evening of activities in Sheshatshiu for youth ages 12-18. Partners included LFC Shield Project, Violence Prevention Labrador, SIFN Public Health, LG Health, Healing Our Nations, and the amazing Ussiniun Youth Centre staff from Sheshatshiu Innu First Nation. Together we held a sharing circle, answered lots of sexual health questions, and gave presentations/demos on sexually transmitted & blood borne infections (STBBIs). Special thanks to Sheshatshiu Innu First Nation staff who invited us down & all the youth who participated!
ACT Team members Noah Martin, Tia Morris & Danielle Ward hosted multiple Relationship sessions on Oct 25 in Cartwright at their school, Henry Gordon Academy. Wanda Lee Mesher, NunatuKavut Youth Coordinator & teacher, Mr. Scott supported the youth who organized the sessions with SHIELD resources. Over 30 students got to enjoy an interactive & informative presentation to learn about healthy relationships, consent & communication.
SHIELD was excited to work with Safe Alliance to participate in the annual 2SLGBTQ+ Pride Week Celebrations in Goose Bay. We co-hosted the Pride Craft Night, participated in the Pride March & hosted a fun photo/info booth at Pride in the Park (which was moved inside because of weather). SHIELD is proud to say we are a safe inclusive space for youth of all genders & sexualities!
