Mentoring with Music: Voices for Change Youth Music & Art Show – June, 2019

15 performers & 6 visual artists between the ages of 12-18 came together in an amazing show of talent on June 12, 2019 in Goose Bay! Voices for Change was a youth music & art fundraiser that took months of hard work & energy, all under the leadership of artist mentors Jacinda Beals, Matthew Barrett & Richard Neville. Participants also attended workshops on healthy relationships & community supports. The performances were just awe-inspiring as was the art exhibit in the foyer, all youth led & adult supported! The youth raised $1000 that was divided equally between Libra House (local women’s shelter) & Labrador Friendship Centre (community outreach programs). We are super grateful to everyone that made the project possible, especially the youth, artist role models & Lawrence O’Brien Arts Centre! This healthy teen relationships workshop was hosted by Lianna Rice and Bob Jackman, who used Indigenous cultural sharing through beadwork to talk about relationships. While learning beading techniques youth did several self-reflection activities to help them learn about themselves, their relationships, what makes a relationship healthy or unhealthy, and the importance of self-care in relationships. Youth ages 12-18 were able to attend, lots of learning and fun was had by all at the Labrador Friendship Centre in Goose Bay!

High School Drama Festival – 2019

SHIELD was very happy to be included in the 2019 Labrador High School Drama Festival in Goose Bay! We sponsored three artist role models to hold 4 sessions each which ensured all participants were able to attend. Jacinda Beals, local musician & recording artist, held a singer/songwriter workshop. Dawna Lee, professional art therapist, hosted sessions about collaging art concepts. Peyton Barrett, owner of Mealy Mountain Gallery, taught youth metal clay techniques. It was a wonderful two days! SHIELD Coordinator Denise Cole also spoke to youth about sexual health & relationships. We are grateful to the Newfoundland & Labrador English School District for inviting us to assist.
