Healthy Relationships Plus Program 2021

Labrador Friendship Centre’s SHIELD Project & YMCA NL partnered to host Healthy Relationships Plus Program (HRPP) for youth in the Lake Melville area ages 12-18.

Along with a great support team, facilitators Dawna Lee & Lisa Sheppard, guided the youth on an 8 week journey about relationships. We are very thankful to the youth participating and all the adults supporting them. We are also very happy to be hosting this at the Lawrence O’Brien Arts Centre, who we partner with often.

Metallurgy & Hammered Copper with Pete Barrett

Youth aged 13-18 participated in this free metal art fabrication course hosted by the SHIELD Project and Community Youth Network NL. Led by Instructor Pete Barrett at the College of the North Atlantic in Goose Bay, NL on March 2-3, 2019.

Metallurgy & Hammered Copper – Exploring metallurgy (specifically copper & brass), youth learned about annealing, joining techniques, flames & pickle and use of flux. Participants shaped wire using hammers, anneal wire and learned safe soldering techniques to create pieces of art including a pendant, ring and a cultural copper wire design.

Working with Metal Clay with Pete Barrett

Youth aged 13-18 participated in this free metal art fabrication course hosted by the SHIELD Project and Community Youth Network NL. Led by Instructor Pete Barrett at the College of the North Atlantic in Goose Bay, NL on Feb 23-24, 2019, Participants learned the process of working with metal clay (copper & bronze) to design pieces of jewelry. Using tools, youth sketched & created a pendant using two design elements: shape & texture. This included kneading clay, cutting shapes, and adding textures based on their drawings.

ACT Retreat 2018

Liz Solo and the SHIELD Project team held a 3 day Art, Culture, and Technology Retreat with 13 youth from the Happy Valley-Goose Bay area.
