ACT Wednesday – Music & Friends


The theme of our last ACT Wednesday in Summer 2021 was Music & Friends. The SHIELD Project was joined by Jacinda Beals and Greg Peach (from the Jacinda Beals Band) to host this event at the Lawrence O’Brien Arts Centre on August 18.

 

 

Project Coordinator Denise Cole, SHIELD Youth Worker Emily Williams-Ford and Project Assistant Jade Rachwal gave a presentation on consent and consent while under the influence.

Participants received loot bags with sexual health resources and promotional items. We also demonstrated proper use of external and internal condoms.

ACT Wednesday – Writer’s Night

August 11 2021 was the SHIELD Project’s ACT Wednesday Writers Night. on August 11, 2021! We’re grateful to have had Mi’kmaq author Dr. Sylvia Moore join us for the evening, leading attendees in some great writing activities.

Denise and Emily also gave a short presentation on healthy relationships & communication. Shout out to Lawrence O’ Brien Arts Centre for their partnership. We love hosting events there. Thank you as well to Dr. Sylvia Moore and all who attended.


ACT Wednesday – TikToking

Jamie Felsberg joined Denise and Emily to host the SHIELD Projects’s ACT Wednesday on August 4. Our activity for the night was TikToking. We had a great evening of evening of creating TikToks, positive messaging & online safety.

ACT Wednesday – Mirror Painting

Our first ACT Wednesday of Summer 2021 happened on July 28!

Jenni-Rose Montague, Emily Williams-Ford & Denise Cole facilitated a fun evening of mirror painting, self-esteem building & sexual health awareness. Participants were given handheld mirrors to paint and had discussions about positive self talk and self love. Jenni-Rose led a conversation on societal beauty standards, measures of success and how to counteract such narratives. Denise and Emily shared information on mental health resources.

Youth Lunch in Makkovik

SHIELD is very thankful to the youth & NG DHSD organizers (Kelly Andersen & Gemma Andersen) for the great discussion on May 27 2021 as we partnered to host a Youth Lunch in Makkovik. We had some awesome questions and sharing. Denise, SHIELD Coordinator, attended by zoom and wishes she could have been there in person. Big shout out to the amazing team at Nunatsiavut Department of Health & Social Development in Makkovik for inviting us.
